The cutting strip is the sacrificial Teflon mat that sits beneath the media on the cutting platen — the blade tip makes contact with the strip during cutting, and a worn or deeply grooved strip causes inconsistent blade depth, media tracking issues, and cut-through on thin vinyl. Replace when visible grooves or damage are present.
