Heat Transfer Vinyl on Hats: Presses, Vinyl and Settings
You can put heat transfer vinyl (HTV) on hats, but you need a cap press to do it well. A cap press has a curved lower platen that matches the shape of the crown and a hold-down that keeps the panel smooth, so the vinyl gets even heat and pressure from edge to edge. This guide covers which cap press fits your volume, which vinyl to use, and the settings and steps for pressing HTV on caps.
Why Hats Need a Cap Press
A t-shirt press has a flat lower platen. A cap crown is curved and stiffened at the front, so on a flat platen the middle of the design gets pressure and the edges do not. That is how you end up with edges that lift after the first few wears.
A cap press solves this two ways:
- Curved lower platen. The platen follows the profile of the cap, so the whole design area sits against heat and pressure.
- Hold-down device. It secures the cap and stretches the front panel smooth before you press.
The Hotronix Clam Basic Cap Heat Press is built for this job. Its curved platen fits standard structured, unstructured, trucker and low-profile caps.
Cap Presses at Central Sign Supplies
Press | Opening | What sets it apart | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hotronix Clam Basic Cap | Manual clam | Curved cap platen, cap hold-down, digital time and temperature | Small shops and startups adding caps |
| Hotronix Auto Cap | Magnetic auto-open | Twin Timer for two-step applications, digital pressure display, optional platens for other headwear | Shops pressing caps every day |
| Hotronix 360 IQ Hat Press | Automatic | 360° print area, one-size-fits-all molded platen, heated lower platen for patches, IQ touch screen with presets | Production cap work and patches |

The Auto Cap lifts itself when the timer ends, which prevents over-application. The 360 IQ goes further: you can press the front, back and sides of a cap without taking it off the press, and the platen handles different cap sizes without a platen change. Which Vinyl to Use on Hats
Match the vinyl to the cap fabric, the same way you would for a shirt.
- Cotton, polyester and blends: Siser EasyWeed. It is a thin 90 micron PU film with a medium-tack clear carrier, so you can place a design on a curved panel before pressing.
- Nylon: Siser EasyWeed Extra, which Siser makes to adhere to nylon.
- Metallic and special finishes: the specialty heat transfer vinyl range, including EasyWeed Electric and Siser Metal. Each lists its own settings.
Keep designs sized to the front panel of the cap. Fine detail cuts cleanly on EasyWeed, but keep lettering and logo lines at least 1/16" thick.
Settings for Siser EasyWeed on Caps
Setting | Siser EasyWeed |
|---|---|
| Temperature | 305°F (150°C) |
| Pressure | Medium |
| Pre-press | 2 to 3 seconds |
| Press time | 10 to 15 seconds |
| Peel | Hot or cold |
These are the vinyl’s settings. Other HTV types press at different temperatures and times, so always check the product page for the vinyl you are using.
How to Apply HTV to a Hat
- Cut mirrored. Cut the design in reverse with a 45° blade and run a test cut first.
- Weed. Remove the waste vinyl with a Siser weeding tool.
- Load the cap. Fit the cap on the curved platen and close the hold-down so the front panel is smooth.
- Pre-press. Press for 2 to 3 seconds to remove moisture and wrinkles.
- Position and press. Place the design, cover it with a heat transfer cover sheet, and press at the vinyl’s settings.
- Peel. EasyWeed peels hot or cold.
- Wait to wash. Wait 24 hours before the first wash.
On the Auto Cap, the Twin Timer lets you set separate times for a pre-heat and the application, or for a two-step application.
Check Your Power Supply
The Hotronix Auto Cap runs on 120V at 500W, and the 360 IQ runs on 120V at 800W. Both need a dedicated circuit. The Clam Basic Cap runs on standard 120V and plugs into a regular shared outlet.
Heat Transfer Vinyl on Hats: FAQ
Can you put heat transfer vinyl on hats?
Yes. Heat transfer vinyl works on caps as long as you can press the crown evenly. A cap press with a curved lower platen and a hold-down does that; a flat t-shirt press does not.
Do I need a special heat press for hats?
For regular cap work, yes. A cap press has a curved platen that matches the shape of the crown. The Hotronix Clam Basic Cap Heat Press is the entry-level option, and the Auto Cap and 360 IQ add auto-open and production features.
What temperature do I press HTV on a hat?
Use the settings for the vinyl. Siser EasyWeed presses at 305°F with medium pressure for 10 to 15 seconds, with a 2 to 3 second pre-press. Other vinyls use different settings, so check the product page for the one you are using.
What is the best heat transfer vinyl for hats?
Siser EasyWeed is a good starting point for cotton, polyester and blended caps. For nylon caps, use Siser EasyWeed Extra, which Siser makes to adhere to nylon.
Can I print the back and sides of a cap without taking it off the press?
On the Hotronix 360 IQ Hat Heat Press, yes. Its 360° print area lets you press the front, back and sides of a cap without removing or repositioning it.
