Yard Sign Sizes: Standard Dimensions Explained
The standard yard sign is 18" tall by 24" wide, printed on 4mm corrugated plastic and mounted on a wire H-stake. That one size covers most real estate, political, event and business yard signs, and every stake and frame on the market is built around it. This guide covers the standard size, the other common sizes and what each is used for, and how to match blanks, stakes and frames so the finished sign stands up.
The Standard Yard Sign Size: 18" x 24"
An 18" x 24" sign is large enough to read from a passing car and small enough to print, stake and store cheaply. It is the size most sign shops stock as pre-cut blanks, and the size standard H-stakes and real estate frames are made to fit.
- Dimensions: 18" tall x 24" wide (landscape).
- Material: 4mm corrugated plastic, usually called coroplast.
- Flutes: run vertically, along the 18" height, so the stake legs slide up into the channels.
- Mounting: a 10" x 30" H-stake.
We stock 18" x 24" corrugated plastic blanks in white and yellow, corona treated so ink and vinyl bond properly, with the flutes already running the right way for stakes.
Common Yard Sign Sizes and What They Are Used For
Size | Typical use | Mounting |
|---|---|---|
| 12" x 18" | Small directional signs, “sold” and rider-style signs, short messages | H-stake or frame |
| 18" x 24" | The standard: real estate, political, event, business, graduation and birthday signs | 10" x 30" H-stake, or an 18" x 24" real estate frame |
| 20" x 28" | Commercial property and higher-visibility real estate signs | Real estate frame |
| 24" x 36" | Large-format property, construction and campaign signs | Real estate frame or 12" x 33" H-stake with a wider panel |
| 4' x 8' | Full-sheet site signs, construction signs and large campaign signs | Posts or a building, not stakes |
Before printing political or business signs, check the local sign rules. Many cities and homeowner associations limit the size and placement of yard signs.
Corrugated Plastic Thickness
4mm is the standard thickness for yard signs. It is light, weatherproof, takes standard H-stakes and lasts 2 to 3 years outdoors. For signs that need to stay flat and rigid for longer, such as real estate signs that go up again and again, AlumaCorr 5mm has aluminum faces over a corrugated core, and pre-painted aluminum sign blanks come in 12" x 18", 18" x 24", 20" x 28" and 24" x 36".
Pre-Cut Blanks or Full Sheets?
Pre-cut 18" x 24" blanks are ready to print and suit standard yard sign runs. Full 4' x 8' corrugated plastic sheets make more sense when you need non-standard sizes or run enough volume that cutting in-house costs less. A 4' x 8' sheet yields 10 standard 18" x 24" blanks: 5 along the 8' length and 2 across the 4' width. The flutes run the 8' length, so cutting the 18" side along the flutes keeps them vertical for stakes. Need a size cut for you? Contact us with your sizes.
Yard Sign Stakes: Which Size Fits?
- 10" x 30" H-stakes: the standard. The 10" width fits 18" x 24" blanks.
- 12" x 33" H-stakes: wider and taller, for panels wider than 24" and for signs that need to stand higher above tall grass or uneven ground.
Both are 9-gauge zinc-plated steel and slide straight into the flutes with no tools. They only work with vertical flutes; a sign cut with the flutes running sideways will not take a stake.
Real Estate Sign Frames
For a more finished look, or for aluminum signs that have no flutes, use a frame. Angle iron real estate frames come in 18" x 24", 20" x 28" and 24" x 36", with a 6" rider slot on top. 1/2" rod frames fit 18" x 24" signs and are heavier-duty for hard ground.
Hanging Instead of Staking
For signs on fences, railings or walls, set #2 brass grommets in the corners so zip ties or rope do not tear through the plastic.
Yard Sign Sizes: FAQ
What is the standard yard sign size?
18" tall by 24" wide, on 4mm corrugated plastic with vertical flutes, mounted on a 10" x 30" H-stake.
How many 18" x 24" yard signs can you cut from a 4' x 8' sheet?
- Cut 5 blanks along the 8' length and 2 across the 4' width, with the 18" side running along the sheet’s flutes so the flutes end up vertical for stakes.
What size stake do I need for an 18" x 24" sign?
A 10" x 30" H-stake. Use a 12" x 33" stake for wider panels or when the sign needs to stand higher.
Which way should the flutes run on a yard sign?
Vertically, along the 18" height, so the stake legs slide up into the channels.
How long do corrugated plastic yard signs last outside?
About 2 to 3 years outdoors. For longer-term signs, use AlumaCorr or aluminum sign blanks.
