Heat Press for HTV: What You Need to Get Started
A heat press is what turns a cut piece of heat transfer vinyl (HTV) into a design that survives the wash. It holds an exact temperature, applies even pressure across the whole platen and times every press to the second, which a household iron cannot do. This guide covers what to look for in a heat press for HTV, which size and style fits your work, and the few accessories you need alongside it.
What You Need to Press HTV
- A heat press. Digital time and temperature, adjustable pressure, and a platen big enough for your largest design.
- Heat transfer vinyl. Siser EasyWeed is the standard for cotton, polyester and blends.
- A cover sheet. A Siser heat transfer cover sheet goes between the platen and the vinyl to prevent scorching and shine.
- A way to cut and weed. A vinyl cutter and a weeding tool to remove the waste vinyl before pressing.
Why a Heat Press and Not an Iron
HTV adhesive needs a set temperature, a set pressure and a set time to bond into the fabric. Siser EasyWeed, for example, calls for 305°F at medium pressure for 10 to 15 seconds. An iron’s temperature varies across its plate and the pressure depends on how hard you push, so results vary from shirt to shirt. A heat press holds all three settings steady across the full platen, press after press, which is what you need when the shirts are being sold.
Clam, Swing-Away or Draw: Which Style?
Heat presses differ mainly in how the heated upper platen opens.
- Clam shell. The upper platen hinges open like a clam. Compact and quick to load, and the most common style for t-shirts. The Hotronix Clam Basic is a clam press.
- Auto-open clam. A clam that lifts itself when the timer ends, so a shirt is never over-pressed while you are busy with the next one. The Hotronix Auto Open Clam works this way.
- Swing-away and draw. The upper platen swings to the side or the lower platen draws out, so the heat is away from your hands while you lay out the garment. Better for thicker items and multi-layer designs. The Hotronix Fusion IQ is a swing and draw press.
What Size Heat Press Do You Need?
- 9" x 12": left-chest logos, youth shirts, tote bags and small items. The Hotronix EASY Craft Press is 9" x 12".
- 15" x 15": a full-front design on a standard adult t-shirt. The most popular size for shops starting out.
- 16" x 20": oversize prints, hoodies, and production work where one press does everything.
Buy for the largest design you expect to press, not the one you are pressing today.

Pressing HTV on Hats
A flat platen cannot press a curved cap evenly. Hats need a cap press with a curved lower platen and a hold-down to keep the crown smooth. The Hotronix Clam Basic Cap Heat Press is the entry point, and the Hotronix Auto Cap Heat Press adds auto-open and a twin timer for two-step applications.
Check Your Power Supply
Check the power needs of the press before you buy. The Hotronix Clam Basic plugs into a standard shared 120V outlet. The Hotronix Auto Open Clam and Fusion IQ run on 120V at 1,800W and need a dedicated circuit, and the Hotronix EASY Craft Press needs a dedicated 20 amp grounded circuit. On a dedicated circuit, do not run another high-demand appliance alongside the press, or the breaker will trip mid-press.

Other HTV types use different settings, so always check the settings for the vinyl you are using. EasyWeed EcoStretch and specialty films each list their own.
Heat Press for HTV: FAQ
Can I use an iron instead of a heat press for HTV?
An iron can work for a one-off project, but its temperature and pressure are uneven, so results vary and designs can lift after washing. For anything you sell, use a heat press.
What size heat press do I need for t-shirts?
A 15" x 15" press handles a full-front design on a standard adult t-shirt. Choose 16" x 20" for oversize prints and hoodies, or 9" x 12" if you mainly press small logos and youth sizes.
What temperature do I press HTV at?
Siser EasyWeed presses at 305°F with medium pressure for 10 to 15 seconds. Other vinyls differ, so check the settings for your material.
Do I need a cover sheet?
Yes. A cover sheet between the platen and the vinyl prevents scorch marks and shine on the garment and keeps adhesive off the heat platen.
Do heat presses need a special outlet?
It depends on the press. The Hotronix Clam Basic plugs into a standard shared outlet. The Auto Open Clam and Fusion IQ need a dedicated circuit, and the EASY Craft Press needs a dedicated 20 amp grounded circuit.
