Heat Press for Hats: Cap Presses Compared

The right heat press for hats depends on how many caps you press and what you put on them. An entry-level clam cap press handles occasional cap orders, an auto-open cap press suits shops pressing caps every day, and a 360° hat press covers front, back, sides and patches in one setup. A multi-purpose swing-away press with a hat attachment is an option if caps are one product among many. This guide compares the cap presses we carry: how each one holds the cap, how it opens, what the controls do, what power it needs and who it suits.

Four Ways to Press a Hat

Every hat heat press has a curved lower platen that follows the shape of the crown. Where they differ is how the press opens, how much of the cap you can reach, and how much the press does for you.

  • Manual clam cap press. You open and close it by hand. Simple, compact and the lowest-cost way into cap work.
  • Auto-open cap press. The press lifts itself when the timer ends, so a cap is never over-pressed while you are busy with the next one.
  • 360° hat press. Lets you press the front, back and sides without taking the cap off the press.
  • Multi-purpose press with a hat attachment. A swing-away t-shirt press that also takes hat, plate and mug attachments.

Hotronix Clam Basic Cap Heat Press

The Hotronix Clam Basic Cap Heat Press is the entry-level cap press. Its curved lower platen fits structured, unstructured, trucker and low-profile caps, and a cap hold-down device keeps the cap in place while you press. It opens by hand and has digital time and temperature controls, and Hotronix offers interchangeable platens for it as well.

It is lightweight and portable, runs on standard 120V and plugs into a regular shared outlet. Choose it if you are a small shop or startup adding caps, or if caps are an occasional order rather than a daily job.

Hotronix Auto Cap Heat Press

The Hotronix Auto Cap Heat Press is a clam shell cap press built for steady work. What it adds over the Clam Basic Cap:

  • Magnetic auto-open. The press opens itself at the end of the cycle, which prevents over-application.
  • Magnetic assist lock-down. It locks down easily, with less strain on wrists and shoulders over a long run.
  • Twin Timer. Two preset time settings, for a two-step application or for a pre-heat followed by the application.
  • Digital pressure display. Time, temperature and pressure are all on the readout, so you can repeat the same press on every cap.
  • Under-the-center pressure adjustment. Gives even heat and pressure from edge to edge.
  • Optional platens. Available for other headwear shapes, styles and sizes.

Like the Clam Basic Cap, it uses a hold-down device to secure the cap and smooth the surface. It carries a lifetime warranty on the heating element, 5 years on the framework, 2 years on the circuit board and 1 year on parts and labor. Choose it if you press caps every day or want consistent results from more than one operator.

Hotronix 360 IQ Hat Heat Press

The Hotronix 360 IQ Hat Heat Press is built for production cap work. Its 360° print area lets you press the front, back and sides of a cap without removing or repositioning it.

  • One-size-fits-all molded platen. Moves between cap sizes without platen changes, which reduces creasing and scorching on structured, unstructured, trucker and low-profile caps.
  • Heated upper and lower platens. Each is controlled on its own, so you can apply a transfer to the cap body and a patch or emblem on the lower platen in the same workflow.
  • IQ Touch Screen. Digital time, temperature and pressure readout, programmable presets and IQ Portal cloud tracking.
  • Automatic opening and one-hand operation. Less operator fatigue and less risk of over-application.

Choose it if caps are a main product line, you decorate more than the front panel, or you apply patches.

StarCraft 8-in-1 Swing Away Presses

The StarCraft 8-in-1 presses are swing-away t-shirt presses that come with a hat attachment, plus plate and mug attachments. Both have a digital touch screen, easy pressure adjustment, a replaceable pressing pad and an idle auto-off timer that shuts off the heating elements after a set time of up to 60 minutes.

Choose one if you want to press shirts, hats, plates and mugs on one machine without buying separate presses. If caps are a large share of your orders, a dedicated cap press is the better fit.

Check Your Power Supply

The Hotronix Clam Basic Cap plugs into a regular shared 120V outlet. The Hotronix Auto Cap and 360 IQ both need a dedicated circuit, and both come in 120V and 240V versions. Make sure you order the voltage that matches your outlet. Do not share the circuit with another high-demand appliance, or the breaker can trip mid-press.

What to Press Onto the Cap

All of these presses work with standard heat transfer vinyl. Settings come from the vinyl, not the press, so check the product page for the material you are using. Our guide to heat transfer vinyl on hats covers which vinyl to use on caps and the step-by-step process, and our HTV time and temperature chart lists settings for the Siser HTV we stock.

Heat Press for Hats: FAQ

What is the best heat press for hats?

It depends on your volume. The Hotronix Clam Basic Cap suits occasional cap orders, the Hotronix Auto Cap suits daily cap work, and the Hotronix 360 IQ suits production shops that press the front, back and sides of caps or apply patches.

Is a hat attachment on a multi-purpose press enough?

For occasional caps alongside shirts and mugs, a StarCraft 8-in-1 Swing Away with its hat attachment can do the job. If caps are a large share of your orders, a dedicated cap press is the better choice.

What does the Twin Timer on the Hotronix Auto Cap do?

It stores two preset time settings, so you can run a two-step application or a pre-heat followed by the application without resetting the timer between steps.

What can the Hotronix 360 IQ hat press do that other cap presses cannot?

It presses the front, back and sides of a cap without removing it, changes between cap sizes without a platen change, and has a heated lower platen for patches and emblems.

Do hat heat presses need a dedicated circuit?

The Hotronix Auto Cap and 360 IQ do. Both come in 120V and 240V versions, so check the electrical requirements before you order. The Hotronix Clam Basic Cap plugs into a regular shared 120V outlet.
