What Is High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS)?

High impact polystyrene is dimensionally stable and impact resistant, in a lightweight sheet that's easy to fabricate. It cuts, scores, drills and machines cleanly without specialist equipment, which makes it one of the easiest sign blank materials for sign shops and display fabricators to work with.

What Styrene Is Used For

High-impact polystyrene (HIPS) is the lightweight, low-cost rigid sheet for interior signs, P-O-P displays, screen-printed signs and short-run sign blanks. It cuts cleanly with a knife or shear, takes ink and vinyl well, and thermoforms, which is why it's a display-shop staple. For outdoor durability, step up to polycarbonate, ACM or aluminum. .040 or .060 Styrene?

The .040 sheet scores and snaps with a utility knife and works well for posters, sign inserts and display backers. Go with .060 when the panel needs to stand on its own, as in hanging signs, POP headers and larger flat signs.

Applications & Uses

The go-to substrate for indoor flat panel signs, point-of-purchase displays, real estate sign inserts and trade show displays. Accepts Oracal 651 vinyl lettering and cut graphics without priming. Lightweight enough to ship flat without freight for smaller quantities.

Is polycarbonate the same as Lexan?

Lexan and TUFFAK are brand names for polycarbonate; TUFFAK SL was formerly sold as Makrolon SL. Our sign-grade polycarbonate is the same type of material, UV-stabilized for outdoor signs.

Polycarbonate or acrylic for outdoor signs?

Polycarbonate for impact and security applications; acrylic for a harder, glossier face where breakage isn't a risk. Both work outdoors; UV-stabilized polycarbonate resists yellowing.

Can you print on polycarbonate sheets?

Yes. Adhesive vinyl, screen printing and direct UV or digital printing all work on sign-grade polycarbonate.

Do you carry 4x8 polycarbonate in 3/16"?
